Chapels: San Pawl l-Eremita |
|
| Situated
in a natural cave in the side of Wied il-Ghasel, this chapel
owes its origin to a grotto which was turned into a small chapel
in 1656 when an altar was hewn out of the rock. Yet there are
also legends tied to this chapel. According to one, Corrado,
a saintly man, lived in this cave in the valley. He used to
scold the Mostin for not living in a proper enough manner. These
exhortations fell on deaf ears and the locals wanted to rid
themselves of Corrado. Setting the holy man up they managed
to stick a blame on him and pelted Corrado with stones. The
pious hermit ran away, arrived at the coast, spread his cape
on the water and went to Gozo. It was to no avail that the repentant
Mostin called him back. Thus in an exhibition of remorse the
locals built a chapel and dedicated it to St. Paul the first
hermit.
The
feast of St. Paul The Hermit is celebrated in this chapel
on the last Sunday of January. There is a second chapel inside
dedicated to Our Lady of Graces and its feast is held on the
last Sunday of September. After restoration works were carried
out by a group of Mosta hard-working volunteers, this chapel
was re-inaugurated by the Mosta Archpriest Rev. Fr. Joe Carabott
on Sunday 12th September 1993, liturgical feast of Our Lady
of Graces, whose feast has been celebrated here since 1656.
It is really worth visiting this chapel on one of these feasts.
